STATEMENT
Deborah Mitchelson is a British artist, born in Edinburgh and now based in West Sussex. She is a masters graduate from the Univeristy of Chichester having completed a BA Hons from the University of the Creative Arts, Farnham.
Her paintings are inspired by the landscape. Her experience and encounters through journeys informs her practice. Deborah relates her work to a sense of place, whether imagined or real.
The traces of presence are seen in a pathway emerging in the grass away from the footpath. By working into the surface of the painting by layering, plastering and carving, she allows the work to evolve continuously until a surface is reached that has its own history, revealing or hiding what has gone before. Colour is used intuitively and the embroidered contours suggest a map of the route of her walks.
Memories and imagination influence the way in which we perceive the world. Deborah’s painting hover between a real and illusionary world.
